Proof of Address in the UK, USA and Canada: Where Requirements Differ
Understand why UK, US and Canadian bank-account applications can require different address evidence, and which questions to ask before gathering documents.

Proof of address requirements depend on the country, institution, product and application channel. A checklist labelled “UK, USA and Canada” can help you organise questions, but it cannot guarantee that a particular document will be accepted everywhere.
Proof of address for a UK bank account
Start with the chosen bank's official document guidance. Barclays' branch guidance includes recent UK bank statements and utility correspondence. HSBC's guidance also discusses online bills and alternative circumstances. These are separate policies: a document or date window listed by one bank should not be transferred automatically to another bank's application.
Digital proof of address in the UK
Check how the account is being opened. An online upload route and an in-branch process may have different presentation requirements. Ask whether the bank needs the original downloadable file, a paper document or another permitted version. Do not assume that a screenshot and an issuer-supplied PDF are interchangeable.
Proof of address in the USA
The US Office of the Comptroller of the Currency explains that banks collect identifying information, including an address, and verify it using their procedures. This does not create one universal list of address documents. Ask your bank about the residential address it needs, supporting evidence and any separate mailing-address field. Requirements for a driver's licence or other public service are separate from bank onboarding.
Proof of address in Canada
The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada describes an account-opening identification route using two reliable-source documents: one connecting your name with your address and another connecting your name with your date of birth. It also describes an alternative route involving identity confirmation. Confirm the bank's process before assuming one uploaded bill completes identification.
Questions to ask before applying
- Which document types are accepted for this product and country?
- What issue-date window applies to each type?
- Are electronic files accepted through my application channel?
- What can I provide if I am a student, a recent mover or living with family?
- Are translation, certification or additional documents required?
If your documents were issued abroad, ask about those specific documents rather than assuming the rules for domestic records apply. Keep the bank's answer with your application notes.
