Can a Rental Agreement Be Used as Proof of Address?

Check the conditions for tenancy agreements, distinguish contracts from booking confirmations, and prepare questions for the recipient when utilities are included in rent.

Can a Rental Agreement Be Used as Proof of Address?

A rental agreement can be eligible for some address checks, but it is not a universal replacement for a utility bill. Start by checking whether the recipient accepts tenancy or lease agreements for the specific application.

What should you check in the agreement?

Review the named tenant, property address, parties, signatures and tenancy dates. These checks help you understand what the document demonstrates; the recipient may impose additional conditions. Wise, for example, specifies named parties, both signatures and tenancy dates in its rental-agreement criteria.

A booking confirmation is a different document

An accommodation booking, deposit receipt, draft lease and signed agreement can describe different stages of an arrangement. If the request says “rental agreement”, do not assume an email confirming payment has the same status. Ask whether it is acceptable before uploading it.

What if the agreement is electronic?

Ask about electronic agreements and signatures if the instructions do not cover them. Obtain the completed copy supplied through the genuine tenancy process and retain any accompanying completion records. Do not assume that every recipient applies the same signature or format rules.

Shared tenancies and bills included

If you are named on a joint agreement, check that the relevant pages identify you and the property. A tenancy solely in a housemate's name does not automatically establish your own link to the address. Explain your arrangement and ask about supporting documents. Where utilities are included in rent, the agreement may be worth discussing as an alternative, but acceptance must still be confirmed.

Recently moved or renewing?

If the agreement starts in the future, ask whether the recipient can use it before occupancy. If an older agreement has been extended, ask which genuine renewal or confirmation records are needed. Do not alter dates to make a document appear more recent.

A concise question for support

I live at this address under a tenancy agreement and utilities are included in rent. Do you accept this agreement for address verification? Please confirm the required pages, signatures, tenancy dates and any additional evidence.

If the agreement is not accepted, ask for another document category that matches your circumstances. A rejection does not necessarily mean the tenancy is invalid; it may simply fall outside the recipient's evidence policy.
